On the Edge of a Dream

During this week two years ago, I started my blog.  The inception of the Hubbard Hall Writer’s Group, led by Jon Katz was looming and I needed to give birth to a platform to begin my writing. In thinking about this process at the time, my only plan was to write about my “Travels with Dad” which was going to be an on-going story about the four special years that I spent with my father during his travels with Alzheimer’s.

But when it was time to write my first post, I had no idea how to begin the complicated story about my relationship with my father, so I wrote about transformations. I was embarking on a transformative time in my life, so it just seemed right.

And so my Blog began…my first post was about transformations.

Since that scary, exciting, liberating, and transforming day, I have written more than 220 posts, with just over 50 being about my father. The process of writing and having a place to write and create naturally led me in many directions. Something I could have never anticipated.

Looking back on these last two years, I have not only had a chance to explore my inner writing desires, but also to delve into my attraction to photography and to develop some drawing and other artistic skills that I never knew I had or had the desire to explore. These illustrative areas support my story-telling.

This whole process, all of the steps and stages, the developed methods and techniques for conceiving a story and putting it to paper, and the resulting altered life I’ve experienced has had a profound effect on my well-being and self-discovery. As author and friend Jon Katz often reminds his readers, everyone has the potential to be creative. Having the belief and trust that it exists, and then the desire to figure out what inspires, will turn us towards and allow us to embrace the mission and purpose of our lives.

During these last two years, I was also compelled to create some poetry. I had never written a poem, and realized at some point along the way that this form of writing was also part of my self-imposed assignment.

So I wrote this to mark this special and personal milestone:

On the edge of a dream

The harmony of animation

Leading to pathways of meaningful turns

Blending generous devotions

Both seen and unseen

To join in the discovery of the joy of life

I dream to stand taller

To live with visions of honor and merit

And emerge from the dimness of life’s misfortunes

 With the spirit of true arrows

Allowing the wavy light of their beams

To aid and guide the surviving wanderer

~The dream has been set in motion~

My desire and commitment to write was and still is a selfish endeavor. I do it for myself. Having readers just adds to the sweetness of the creating itself.

From a very privileged place, I thank the people who have been with me from the beginning, and all who have visited the out pouring of my self-exploration.
