The Last Halloween Gathering

Our very last front yard Halloween party ended last night a 9pm.

Halloween was always a favorite time for me as a kid.  We lived in a small neighborhood on a dead end street off of a main road, so it was always just the 10 of us….my siblings and some neighbor kids.  But, when Brian and I moved here in August of 1995, I was overwhelmed by the number of Trick-or-Treaters we got that first year.  We had to get more candy before the night was over.

So, for the next 17 Halloweens, we met the ghostly creatures, the power rangers, and the Cinderella’s in the front yard with tiki torches, a fire in a portable fire place, and a table of cookies and soda…and of course candy hand-outs.  Our close friends Betsi and Ted also began sharing this special night with us because they don’t get any trick-or-treaters in their rural neighborhood.  Ted always  brought his fabulous homemade chili, and our neighbors, Pon and Joel began hauling over the best pulled pork we’ve ever had!

My friend Jill never missed a gathering either.  She always helped me set up, and then took over and shared the task of inviting the ghouls and princesses to soda, cookies, and candy.

We’re moving back to the home I grew up in.  The neighborhood is still small and extremely quiet on Halloween.  We’ll miss the excitement that bubbled over on our street every year on this special night, and will forever cherish the memories.

Aww, that’s sad, touching, and wonderful all at the same time. Didn’t realize you were moving Diane although now that I say that I think I saw you make some reference of that to Jon or Maria. When’s your move?

Your neighborhood will be missing you very much,Diane! People who make the holidays special for all those around them are a blessing. Our lives are the memories we create. Yours is obviously bursting at the seams! Your move will be an act of spreading your wealth of good cheer and community. Anticipating all the stories you will have for us!
