Early Adulthood

Travels with Dad

—-This is a story of a complex relationship with my father, Al, who I came to love and understand after he was diagnosed with dementia.—-

All 3 Fiore boys joined the Armed Services.   Gus became a Marine, Al joined the Air Force, and Addie became a Naval Commander.  You can imagine how proud the parents were!

My father was a Military Police during the Korean war.  Although his parents were proud of him for taking on this responsibility, they had not had time to prepare for his departure.  The story goes that Al and his Friend Gil “broke” in to City Hall in Glens Falls one night, signed themselves up for Boot Camp, and left the next morning.

Al was well past graduating from high school by this point, and floundering in the job department.  He and a friend had opened up a hot dog stand.  They tired of that after a few years.  So, to him, this must have seemed like a logical thing to do….a ready-made job….no more trying to figure it out on your own.

Luckily, he was routed away from the Nevada desserts where all of the “testings” were taking place at the time.  He ended up in Germany.

His friend Gil was killed in a piloting accident.
